'H' is for Healthy Food Pyramid

We have moved on to the letter 'H' on our phonics wall and a few days ago made a healthy food pyramid to look at some category types we hadn't talked about before. Bubble has sorted foods into fruits and vegetables but never into healthy and not so healthy food groups and I thought the classic food pyramid was a great way to show how some foods are for 'anytime' and others were only 'sometimes' foods.

* cardboard
* marker
* picutres/stickers of different types of food
* glue

First I cut a food pyramid from cardboard and sectioned it with a marker. I labelled the sections 'sometimes food' and 'anytime food' because I want Bubble to get the idea that healthy food can be eaten anytime and foods that aren't so healthy are for 'sometimes' only :-)
Sorry about the grainy pictures, my camera was running low on battery power!

We talked about each food and Bubble guessed which section it should go in. If she guessed incorrectly I told her the correct answer and why ("because it's made with lots of sugar", "because it's a fruit" etc...).

We've hung it on our phonics wall so we can discuss it this week and elaborate a bit on the whole 'healthy' and 'not so healthy' thing.

  1. This is a great idea for learning about healthy and unhealthy foods. It sounds like it was fun for Bubble too. I've included your post on my weekly favorites here:
